What Causes Teeth to Discolor?
Over time, our teeth begin to darken, usually due to outside factors, such as consumption of specific foods or tobacco use. For orthodontic patients, the portions of the teeth behind the dental brackets are actually protected while the exposed teeth continue to be subjected to darkening factors. This is another reason why it is important to maintain proper care by brushing and flossing with braces and retainers.
Foods that are common contributors to yellowing or stained teeth are:
- Coffee and tea
- Red wine
- Soda
- Dark fruits or fruit juices
- Dark vegetables
Such discoloration, which occurs naturally over time, can generally be successfully treated with in-office teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening is typically not recommended for teeth that are discolored due to:
- Dental trauma
- Decay
- Fluoride overexposure
- Medication
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the fastest teeth whitening results?
The best way to achieve your max white in the least amount of time is to get a GLO Science professional in-office teeth whitening treatment with a certified GLO dentist/orthodontist. Dr. Greenberg of RxSmile Orthodontics, offers GLO professional-strength products and treatments to get the best results within the shortest amount of time.
How does GLO at-home teeth whitening system work?
GLO’s at-home teeth whitening system uses gentle heat and blue LED light to provide safe and effective tooth whitening results. GLO teeth whitening gel is thick, not runny, and stays in place (without the use of strips or annoying trays). Get up to five or more shades lighter in five to seven days!
How long does it take to whiten my teeth?
You will visibly see results with each application. GLO is clinically proven to whiten teeth an average of five shades over the course of one treatment (one treatment = five to seven days). The more you GLO, the brighter your smile will get! Everyone’s smile is different and there are many factors that affect teeth whitening, so some people’s teeth will whiten faster; some will take more time.
Will it hurt? I have sensitive teeth!
GLO whitening gel is specially formulated to be sensitivity free. It contains safe and effective teeth whitening ingredients, is free of alcohol and carbamide peroxide, and is designed to stay put on your teeth and off your gums and soft tissue. The vast majority of GLO users do not experience any sensitivity while using GLO.
Is GLO teeth whitening safe?
Yes. GLO whitening gel was formulated by Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, a top practicing NY dentist. It has been proven to be safe and effective in multiple clinical studies. The GLO Brilliant Teeth Whitening Device is a Class 1 Medical Device that pairs with gentle teeth whitening ingredients. Both products are registered with the FDA. While the products are safe, as a best practice, pregnant women interested in teeth whitening should first consult their doctors before use.
How long will the teeth whitening last?
Generally patients can expect to see results for 6-8 months. To prolong results it’s important to practice good oral hygiene in between treatments. Whitening your teeth will require a maintenance program depending on your lifestyle, age and original tooth shade. It’s recommended to complete a full GLO whitening treatment (which is five to seven days). After that, maintain your teeth whitening results with one day of whitening each month, followed by another five-to-seven-day full GLO whitening treatment after six months. Additional five-to-seven-day treatments with your at-home GLO device can be safely repeated until your desired result is achieved.
Can I use GLO products during Orthodontic Treatment?
We don’t recommend using the GLO Device while you have braces. You can, however, use GLO Vials for easy brush-on whitening with your brackets. You can also use the GLO Device during aligner treatments (when your aligners are not in your mouth). GLO Vials pair perfectly with aligners as well – just apply the gel to your teeth and put in your aligners over the gel. Use a GLO Device as soon as your get your braces off for a beautiful, straight, white smile!
Can I use GLO products with Invisalign aligners?
Yes. GLO Vials are ideal for brush-on teeth whitening and are ideal for use with Invisalign® aligner treatments (when these devices are not in your mouth). Just apply the gel to your teeth and put in your aligners over the gel.
Can GLO products be used with other dental work?
Yes! GLO is safe to use on any unnatural tooth surface, including bridges, veneers, crowns and fillings. It will remove surface stains and restore them to their original color.
Will the light from the GLO mouthpiece affect my eyes or skin?
No. The GLO mouthpiece does not use any UV light and is completely safe for skin and eyes. The mouthpiece uses safe 470 nm blue light generated by LEDs inside the mouthpiece. The light lets you know when the mouthpiece is on and warming.
